Feed and Nutrition: Will these biological agents completely replace antibiotics in fermented feed in the future?

Biological feed is animal feed or feed raw materials produced with microbial fermentation technology as the core, characterized by containing a large number of beneficial microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria or yeast that are good for animal health. Since January 2006, the European Union has completely banned the addition of antibiotics in animal feed. Subsequently, Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea have also successively formulated antibiotic-free breeding standards for livestock and poultry.

Our country has also received attention from all sectors of society regarding biological feed and antibiotic-free breeding of livestock and poultry. Microbial fermentation technology provides a large number of products for the feed industry, including amino acids (such as lysine, threonine, and isoleucine), vitamins (mainly B vitamins), enzyme preparations, organic acids (such as lactic acid and acetic acid), and live bacterial preparations. Traditional feed processing methods (such as crushing, mixing, puffing, and pelleting) have basically not involved biochemical changes, while microbial fermentation is a highly concentrated biochemical reaction that can deeply process feed raw materials. Many feed nutritionists assert that without utilizing the metabolic effects of microorganisms, it is difficult to achieve new breakthroughs in feed processing; developing the biological feed industry and promoting healthy animal husbandry is challenging.
